Since 1978, Miller has worked as a fine art photographer, painter and conceptual artist. Along with painting, carpentry, needlework, wardrobe, propping and other mediums and methods, the selected elements come together in her current exhibit to form a metaphorical language that draws on the mysterious, dream imagery, distant memories, gut reactions, unspoken fears and amorphous hopes. This body of work is composed of found objects, vintage treasures, personal mementos and items that speak to the heart and critical mind. The use of antique elements assists in depicting a mythical or fairytale interpretation allowing for dreamlike and timeless images.
The role of mother is explored in Fertile Dreams along with unreal expectations, misconceptions and surrounding myths. Miller’s work incorporates the carrying of the fetus, incubation and the woman as vessel. The evocative and vulnerable portrayal of the feminine raises issues of autonomy, stereotypes, equality and self-esteem. Fertile Dreams takes on a life of its own, dealing with primal emotions and thoughts that transcend time and place. Images of life and death emerged along with dreamlike qualities of both flight and confinement. Creating dualities in which beauty is offset by an element of fear or discomfort reveals the complex aspects of the maternal psyche. Miller’s consistent focus on the feminine continues to translate through various mediums of her art.
Miller’s current work in assemblage is a natural progression from her fine art photography and her 20 years of work in film as a production stylist and coordinator for commercials and national print ads. Creating sets, casting, wardrobe, props and locations has been an integral part of her background. Freyda Miller’s work is in the permanent collections of the St. Louis Museum of Art, The New Orleans Museum of Art, The Rijksmuseum: Amsterdam, Tokyo and Fuji Art Museum: Tokyo, Peter Palmquist Archives: Women in Photography International and the UCLA Library, Charles E. Young Research Library, Department of Special Collections.
