Fishtown’s Highwire Gallery is pleased to present MicroCosmic, an exhibit of 2-dimensional works by Philadelphia artists Joshua Gabriel, Rochelle Marcus Dinkin, and Rachel Isaac, running from Friday, December 6, 2013 through Saturday, December 29, 2013.  Each of the three MicroCosmic artists uses intricate detail and layers to create their own worlds, inhabiting the space between memory, fantasy, history, and the galaxy.  MicroCosmic kicks off with an opening reception featuring wine, hors d’oeuvres, all three artists in attendance, and other treats on Friday, December 6, 2013 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm.  The reception will be part of Philly’s monthly First Friday art crawl.  This is a free event. Angel City Chorale (ACC), Los Angeles’ most entertaining and spirited choir, kicks off the season this year with Joyful, Joyful, its 20th annual holiday concert and sing-along, taking place over two nights the first weekend of December on Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 8, 2013 at Wilshire United Methodist Church.  The 160-member Angel City Chorale will perform its unique mix of Christmas and Chanukah favorites, as well as original compositions, in the group’s eclectic combination of styles ranging from classical to pop, incorporating contemporary, world, and gospel beats.  Both performances start at 7:00pm.  Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door, with discounts for students and seniors. The performance space at Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles, Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz (TRK), is pleased to present Monica Casadei’s Traviata, a contemporary dance interpretation of the famous opera performed by Italian company Artemis Danza, on Saturday, November 16, 2013.  Traviata is based on Giuseppe Verdi’s famous opera La Traviata, translated into the language of dance by eclectic choreographer Casedei.  The opera tells the doomed story of upper class prostitute Violetta, who sacrifices herself for love.  The show will start at 7:30pm and will take place at Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz, 10361 W. SAVE THE DATE:  11/9/13… Audiobook lovers and literature buffs can delight in the rare opportunity to see and hear LA’s top audiobook narrators and celebrity guests come together live to perform selections from time honored classics and contemporary best sellers of every genre.  The marathon will begin with a Children’s Hour followed by twelve 90-minute performance blocks.  In each block a different collection of five fan favorite narrators will read selections in a specific genre of literature.  This charity event will benefit beloved audiobook veteran Bob Deyan, who is battling with ALS, and The ALS Association.  Read the rest of this entry »

Arts organization Create:Fixate (C:F) presents Dreams on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Lot 613 in Downtown Los Angeles.  Beyond C:F’s signature blend of vibrant artwork and eclectic music produced by local talent, this show captures the mixed-medium spirit – with over 25 visual artists – that patrons have come to expect from these one-night-only events. The excitement begins at 4:00pm with a three-hour gallery preview.  Parents are encouraged to bring the whole family during the preview hours and take advantage of the Kids Kreativity Zone.   Overflowing with art supplies, the Zone provides a supervised space where youth can dive into their own expression while parents explore the exhibit. While all ages are welcome during the preview, attendees must be at least 21-years old to enter after 7:00pm.

The performance space at Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles, Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz, is pleased to present Malika, Queen of the Cats, a puppet theatre performance by Portland-based Tears of Joy Theatre, on Thursday, November 14, 2013. Malika, Queen of Cats is an artful rendition of a classic Palestinian folktale about the power of giving.  The performance is full of fun, with humor and sight gags for children and adults alike to enjoy.  The hour-long story features a benevolent royal cat, decked out in a jeweled headdress and colorful Arabic garb, that dispenses magic to the worthy.  The show will start at 7:30pm and will take place at Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz, 10361 W. Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz (TRK), the performance space at Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles, is pleased to present the World Kora Trio, a rare polycultural musical proposition rooted in western jazz traditions, on Wednesday, February 26, 2014.  The World Kora Trio, based in France, features American electric cellist Eric Longsworth, Malian kora player Chérif Soumano, and French singer-percussionist Jean-Luc Di Fraya. The group’s original jazz and folk compositions by Longsworth merge with the colors of African music, embodied by the kora. This will be the group’s U.S. debut; sponsored by Spedidam, Région Rhone Alpes, Fond de la Création Musicale, and The Canada Council for the Arts.

The performance space at Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles, Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz, is pleased to present rock band Vadel on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at 7:30pm. Featuring 20 year-old multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter Adam Vadel, who live in Paris, the band will make its US debut fresh off of opening dates for Santana in Europe this past summer. With his band, composed of David Junior Assolo (bass), Virgile Carlsson (drums), and Jaykeyboards (keyboards), Vadel delivers powerful and straight forward rock ‘n roll in the tradition of T. Rex, David Bowie, and the Kinks, flavored with Beatlesque pop, Zeppelin heaviness, and Prince-worthy funkiness.

The Republic of South Africa’s Department of Arts and Culture will bring its South African Arts Festival 2013 (SAAF), a weekend of South African film and music, to Downtown Los Angeles for the first time, with events on Friday, October 4 through Sunday October 6, 2013. The inaugural SAAF 2013 will showcase seven South African films and seven musical artists representing the diversity of the South African experience at free events over two days.  Highlights include Saturday’s outdoor “South African Music Festival” at Grand Performances and a day of South African films screening on Sunday at Regal Cinemas L.A. LIVE Stadium 14 and Grand Performances.  Friday’s private preview and the Sunday closing night event both combine the screening of a South African feature film with an invitation-only reception.  Screenings will include animation, narrative, and documentary works.  Read the rest of this entry »

The performance space at Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles, Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz, is pleased to open the 13th season of its public performing arts series on Friday, September 27, 2013 with Laila Biali, the award-winning Canadian jazz pianist, vocalist and songwriter.  Biali is known for taking the best of pop, rock, classical and soul, and informing it with her knowledge of jazz as she weaves together her exquisite musical arrangements.  The event is the Los Angeles stop of Biali’s North American Tour. This will also be Biali’s Los Angeles debut as a solo performer.  Joining Biali on stage will be Hamilton Price (bass) and Aaron McLendon (drums).
