The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (SASSAS) presents sound. at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook: MURAL, featuring internationally recognized experimental duo Jim Denley (Australia) and Kim Myhr (Norway) on Sunday, May 5, 2013.  MURAL’s site specific work will be inspired by the Overlook – the site itself will dictate the trajectory of the musical structures created in the space.  Accompanying MURAL in realizing this new SASSAS commission will be eight Los Angeles area musicians including Matt Barbier, Ted Byrnes, Archie Carey, Claire Chenette, and Daniel Corral.  The free concert begins at 5:00pm, ending right before sunset. Angel City Chorale (ACC) will celebrate its first two decades in song with special reunion concerts on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2, 2013, at 7:00 p.m.  The Angel City Chorale 20th Anniversary Concerts will feature the West Coast premiere of Grammy Award-Winning Composer Christopher Tin’s Calling All Dawns.  In addition to performing Tin’s highly acclaimed three-movement piece, which celebrates the circle of life in 12 languages, Angel City Chorale will also perform “The Best of ACC,” highlighting much-loved and crowd-favorite songs from the choir’s 20-year history.  The Greatest Hits portion of the program will include performances of Randy Newman’s Louisiana and Toto’s Africa with a choir-created thunderstorm.  Conducted by ACC Founder and Artistic Director Sue Fink, the concerts will be held at the historic Wilshire United Methodist Church.  The audience is invited to join the performers for a dessert reception after each performance. New York’s Rattlestick Playwrights Theater announces the Los Angeles premiere of the critically-acclaimed play Slipping, written and directed by Daniel Talbott, which will begin previews Thursday, April 4, 2013 at the Lillian Theatre in Hollywood, CA.  The five-week limited engagement, which was previously scheduled to open the first weekend of April, will now open on Saturday, April 13, 2013 due to scheduling conflicts and run through Sunday, May 5, 2013. Considered one of off-Broadway’s most respected companies, the OBIE Award-winning Rattlestick is proud to be presenting its first Los Angeles production. Étant Donné explores dance as a conceptual art form, with performances that interpret the world through gesture, incorporating elements of independent film, Dadaism, literary theory, and humor. For the fourth year, Theatre Raymond Kabbaz (TRK) presents A Week of French Language Cinema in Los Angeles, with FREE nightly screenings of award-winning Francophonic films, from Monday, March 18 to Friday, March 22, 2013. The program includes notable films Sister from Switzerland (3/18), Seducing Doctor Lewis from Canada (3/19), The Snows of Kilimanjaro from France (3/20), On the Sly from Belgium (3/21), and Laurence Anyways from Quebec (3/22). All films include subtitles in English. Monday and Friday night screenings are at 7:45pm, preceded by receptions with wine and hors d’oeuvres at 7:00pm. Respected New York-based Rattlestick Playwrights Theater is coming to LA!  Its first Los Angeles production, Slipping, will start previews on Thursday, April 4th and run through Sunday, May 5th at Elephant Stage’s Lillian Theatre.  Written and directed by Daniel Talbott, Slipping follows the emotional trajectory of 17-year old Eli (Seth Numrich [Golden Boy, War Horse]), after the violent suicide of his beloved father.  Seeking a fresh start, he and his mother move from San Francisco to Iowa, where a new relationship with a boy at school exposes Eli again to the possibility of closeness and the danger of being swallowed by it.  The New York production of Slipping was named one of the top ten plays of 2009 by The Advocate. Theatre Raymond Kabbaz (TRK) presents A Journey Through Advertising, the second installment of TRK’s short film series, a presentation of thought-provoking, stylish and humorous ads from France and beyond, on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at 7:30pm.  The presentation features a selection of advertisements, in French, English, and Spanish (with subtitles in English as needed), including shockvertisements, prevention ads, advertisements related to the environment, spots on junk consumption, as well as ads which fuel the obsession for a perfect body.  Complimentary wine and cheese will be served at intermission.  The program is not suitable for children under the age of 12.  This event is made possible by La Maison de la Pub and the Film and TV Office of the Consulate General of France in Los Angeles.  Read the rest of this entry »

Two of the world’s best guitar ensembles will share the stage when Theatre Raymond Kabbaz presents California Guitar Trio (CGT) and Montréal Guitare Trio (MG3) performing together on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at 7:30pm.  When these two ensembles join forces, audiences will be treated to a “six by six-string” set of eclectic music, including Baroque fugues, Spaghetti Western movie themes, arena rock, world and surf music, and intricate original compositions.  Featuring six virtuoso guitarists from four countries (Japan, Canada, Belgium, and the U.S.), CGT, on steel-stringed guitars, and MG3, on nylon-stringed guitars, fuse over 40 years of combined performing experience into one unique ‘phenomensemble.’  The event is the Los Angeles stop of a 20+ city tour in the U.S. and Canada and will be the first time the two trios will perform together in the City of Angels. Theatre Raymond Kabbaz, in association with The Jazz Bakery, presents the powerful Ibrahim Maalouf Quintet on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 7:30pm.  The event is the Los Angeles stop of the quintet’s international tour for its new album, Wind, released in November 2012.  French-Lebanese Ibrahim Maalouf, on trumpet, will be joined on-stage by Frank Woeste on piano, Ira Coleman on double bass, Walter Smith on saxophone, and Clarence Penn on drums.  Wind is an original score, composed by Maalouf, for the René Clair silent film The Prey of the Wind.  The event is supported by the French Embassy/Cultural Services.  Read the rest of this entry »
