Perfect Circuit Audio presents a FREE celebration of electronic music, Electric Sunset, on Saturday, August 1, 2015 at the company’s new Burbank music gear retail store. The event will feature an eclectic line-up of Los Angeles-based electronic musicians who are known for pushing the boundaries of gear and technology in interesting ways, including Twin Braids, Side Brain, Kid606, M. Geddes Gengras, and John Tejada. DJ Turbotito will also spin between sets. The event, which celebrates Perfect Circuit’s new retail outlet in Burbank, is sponsored by Moog, Ableton, Elektron, and Roland. Funktion-One Sound will be provided by Funkworks Audio. Hollywood Horrorfest (HHF) kicks off on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 3:30pm with screenings of competition films and a red carpet ceremony for The Howling at 7:30pm. At 11:00pm, the festival invites horror fans to ANOTHER red carpet event… the West Coast premiere of Afflicted. Fresh from its multi-award winning success at Fantastic Fest, the film is set to open on April 4th (in theaters and on VOD). Its L.A. debut with feature the writer/director/acting team of Derek Lee and Clif Prowse in attendance. The Republic of South Africa’s Department of Arts and Culture will bring its South African Arts Festival 2013 (SAAF), a weekend of South African film and music, to Downtown Los Angeles for the first time, with events on Friday, October 4 through Sunday October 6, 2013. The inaugural SAAF 2013 will showcase seven South African films and seven musical artists representing the diversity of the South African experience at free events over two days.  Highlights include Saturday’s outdoor “South African Music Festival” at Grand Performances and a day of South African films screening on Sunday at Regal Cinemas L.A. LIVE Stadium 14 and Grand Performances.  Friday’s private preview and the Sunday closing night event both combine the screening of a South African feature film with an invitation-only reception.  Screenings will include animation, narrative, and documentary works.  Read the rest of this entry »

The Brazilian Hour will host an outdoor carnivalesque celebration, A Tale of Two Nations: Nação Estrela Brilhante & Nation Beat, bringing the northeast coast of Brazil to Grand Performances at California Plaza in Downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, August 17, 2013. Commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Brazilian Hour’s locally produced, internationally-heard radio program, this free event will pair award-winning Brazilian performance group Nação Estrela Brilhante, with New York City-based Nation Beat. Dance Camera West, in association with Grand Performances and the Los Angeles Film Festival (LAFF), presents the Dirty Dancing Dance-A-Long at California Plaza in Downtown Los Angeles on Friday, June 22, 2012 at 7:45pm.  In celebration of the 25th anniversary of Dirty Dancing, this free event will feature a pre-show salsa lesson led by members of the Los Angeles urban Latin dance troupe CONTRA-TIEMPO, followed by a screening of the classic coming of age tale, widely considered one of the best dance films of all time.  Simultaneously onstage, CONTRA-TIEMPO will also act as a “shadow cast” during the film’s key dance sequences.  This pre-festival event ushers in the 11th annual Dance Camera West Dance Media Film Festival, which takes place from Thursday, June 28 to Saturday, June 30, 2012 in Los Angeles at LACMA and the Hammer Museum.

Shakespeare by the Sea (SBTS) announces its 14th season of bringing free Shakespeare performances to the masses in Southern California, opening with the romantic comedy Much Ado About Nothing on June 9, 2011 followed one week later, on June 16, with the opening of the ultimate family drama The Tragedy of King Lear. SBTS performances run for 10 weeks throughout Los Angeles and Orange County – over 40 performances in all – beginning with shows in San Pedro at Point Fermin Park from June 9th through July 2nd.  Starting July 6th the troupe hits the road on a tour that will reach a total of 21 public parks in 19 towns – from Pasadena to Laguna Niguel – into August.  The production wraps up back in San Pedro for two grand finale performances on August 12 and 13, 2011.  All performances are in the evening starting at either 7:00pm or 8:00pm.  Audiences are encouraged to gather with friends and family early to dine picnic-style under the stars to make the most of this classic entertainment experience.  Admission is always free!
