The Hangout Group and Malo will feature Surely Lorraine at The Silver Lake Sessions on Wednesday night, May 21, 2014, at Malo Cantina Suavecita on Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles. Surely Lorraine front woman Anime Wong will perform her post-punk/new wave music project solo. Opening acts include cellist-singer-songwriter Luke Janela (9:15pm) and Kondo Exurbia (10:00pm) fronted by Tom Pinkava, of post-punk band Superbas and experimental sound project Communication Kills. Doors are at 8:00pm, with free drinks until 10:00pm using the super secret password found on the event’s Facebook page, and Happy Hour prices on food all night in the upstairs bar. Angel City Chorale (ACC) will reunite with acclaimed Composer Christopher Tin at its upcoming spring concerts, Elements, on Saturday, June 7, and Sunday, June 8, 2014 at the Wilshire United Methodist Church in Los Angeles. Conducted by ACC Founder and Artistic Director Sue Fink, the first half of the concerts will feature selections that explore the four elements in a variety of musical styles including pop (Earth, Wind & Fire), classical (Brahms), as well as spirituals (“Ain’a That Good News”). The second half of the program features the West Coast Premiere of Tin’s new song cycle, The Drop that Contained the Sea, the much-anticipated follow-up to Tin’s Grammy Award-winning album, Calling All Dawns, which was hailed by critics as a masterpiece. Tin’s new classical/world music fusion work features stunning juxtapositions of rhythms and cultures. Songs depict global visions of water from the snows of Mongolia to the rains of Africa. Each of the 10 pieces is sung in a different language, including Proto-Indo-European, Turkish, and Xhosa. Laila Biali, the award-winning Canadian jazz pianist, vocalist and songwriter, will bring her signature genre-bending, crowd-sourced concerts to six major cities in her first headlining U.S. tour in March 2014. Biali is known for taking the best of pop, rock, classical and soul, and informing it with her knowledge of jazz, as she weaves together exquisite musical arrangements. The Rachel Rosenthal Company (RRC) presents Instant Fairy Tales, a brand new series of original fairy tales for the 21st century at Espace DbD in Los Angeles. Instant Fairy Tales: The Longest Winter, the series’ inaugural offering, which features an allegorical tale about learning to care for the environment, will be held on Saturday, January 25, Sunday, January 26, Saturday, February 8, and Sunday, February 9, 2014. The performance space at Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles, Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz (TRK), is pleased to present Monica Casadei’s Traviata, a contemporary dance interpretation of the famous opera performed by Italian company Artemis Danza, on Saturday, November 16, 2013. Traviata is based on Giuseppe Verdi’s famous opera La Traviata, translated into the language of dance by eclectic choreographer Casedei. Malika, Queen of Cats is an artful rendition of a classic Palestinian folktale about the power of giving. The performance is full of fun, with humor and sight gags for children and adults alike to enjoy. The hour-long story features a benevolent royal cat, decked out in a jeweled headdress and colorful Arabic garb, that dispenses magic to the worthy.
