The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (SASSAS) is pleased to present sound. at 356 S. Mission Rd.: Aaron Dilloway / Jason Lescalleet / John Wiese. The first-ever Los Angeles performance of electro-acoustic duo Aaron Dilloway and Jason Lescalleet will take place on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at 8:00pm. Part of the SASSAS sound. series, the concert features two of the most respected American underground experimental/noise artists performing at 356 S. Mission Rd., a new venue created by renowned artist Laura Owens. Opening for Dilloway and Lescalleet is Los Angeles-based John Wiese, founding member of the concrète grindcore band Sissy Spacek and an alum of SASSAS’s recent Tape Music concert. The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (SASSAS) is pleased to announce Blast! [10], the annual SASSAS garden party and fundraiser, on Sunday, May 19, 2013 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. With food, beverages, and a silent art auction, Blast! [10] will take place at the private home of the Hillenburg family in San Marino, CA. To celebrate its 10-year milestone, Blast! [10] will feature many of the artists and musicians who have made the event so successful over the years. Works by notable artists such as Louise Lawler, James Welling, and Lari Pittman will be featured in the silent auction. Live music will be provided by Dani Tull, Dos, and Killsonic. The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (SASSAS) presents sound. at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook: MURAL, featuring internationally recognized experimental duo Jim Denley (Australia) and Kim Myhr (Norway) on Sunday, May 5, 2013. MURAL’s site specific work will be inspired by the Overlook – the site itself will dictate the trajectory of the musical structures created in the space. Accompanying MURAL in realizing this new SASSAS commission will be eight Los Angeles area musicians including Matt Barbier, Ted Byrnes, Archie Carey, Claire Chenette, and Daniel Corral. The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (SASSAS) presents Fix-It-Up Too, a one-day exhibition and silent auction on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at Blum & Poe in Culver City. Fix-It-Up Too reprises The Fix-It-Up Show, a project first developed by artists Jeffrey Vallance and Michael Uhlenkott for a 1981 exhibition at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE) in which well-known artists were asked to contribute works for Vallance and Uhlenkott to alter or “fix.” Both artists have given SASSAS their blessing to recreate The Fix-It-Up Show as a fundraiser and will also reprise their roles as “fixers.” Nine other internationally recognized artists including Barbara Bloom, Meg Cranston, Lisa Lapinski, Dave Muller, Stephen Prina, Jim Shaw, Alexis Smith, Mungo Thomson, and Christopher Williams have also agreed to alter the works of more than 100 artists for this special exhibition and sale.

The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (SASSAS), in conjunction with the MAK Center for Art and Architecture (R.M. Schindler House), presents sound. at the Schindler House: Tape Music, a rare concert of music composed for reel-to-reel tape on Saturday, August 25, 2012. The unique architecture of the Schindler House creates multiple listening spaces to revisit this historic concert form featuring recent works from John Wiese and William Basinski; historic works from Pauline Oliveros, and the collaborative duo of Mike Kelley and Jim Shaw; as well as selections from Gary Todd’s Cortical Foundation label that were composed for tape, on tape, and originally presented on tape.

Over a dozen concurrent micro concerts will transform individual motel rooms into venues for installations and live performances allowing key moments in Southern California sound and music history to be experienced simultaneously and sequentially in a single location. The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (SASSAS) concludes its series of summer events with sound. at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook: Alex Cline, Lady Noise and William Roper on Sunday, October 16, 2011. The concert features new compositions by percussionist Alex Cline, experimental collective Lady Noise and brass specialist William Roper. These new SASSAS commissions will be played by more than 30 Los Angeles area musicians arrayed in different locations across the historic topography of the Overlook. The concert begins at 3:00pm at the apex of the Overlook and concludes 90 minutes later in the Safine Rabines-designed pavilion next to the park visitor center. The event is free. Street parking is available along Jefferson Blvd., but come prepared for a steep climb up the Overlook stairs. Parking at the top of the hill is $6.00. Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook is located at 6300 Hetzler Road, Culver City, CA 90232.

Beacon Arts and the Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (SASSAS) present Ad Hoc #2: David Watson & David Grubbs, a site-specific sonic exploration of the Beacon Arts Building’s fourth floor on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 8:00 pm. This free event features a unique aural experience that encourages interplay between the musicians and the listening audience. In realizing these new works, New Yorkers Watson and Grubbs will be working with several experimental sound artists and musicians from Los Angeles including Joe Potts, Steve Roden, and William Roper.
